The Story Behind This Piece
I’m a disabled artist who paints, draws, and writes using my mouth. I also happen to be blind in one eye, so creating art has always meant finding my own way to do things.
My European starling, Tumble, has always been fascinated with my iPad whenever I’m painting. He loves perching on top of it and grabbing my Apple Pencil while I’m trying to work.
One day I decided to stop fighting him and see what would happen.
Instead of taking the pencil back, I simply held the end of it and let Tumble do whatever he wanted. Every line, scribble, and mark was made entirely by him. I was just there to keep the pencil from falling.
Later, I looked at his little masterpiece and realized I couldn’t let those marks disappear. I transformed Tumble’s own artwork into the watercolor painting you see here, carefully preserving his original lines and weaving them into the finished piece.
This painting isn’t just inspired by Tumble.
It was created with him.
I signed the artwork with my initials alongside Tumble’s own unique “signature,” making this a true collaboration between a disabled artist and one very mischievous little starling.
I hope it brings you as much joy as creating it brought us.
